The Qur'an affirms Muhammad as “the messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets” as stated below:
Q 33:40 “Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets.” (Pickthall)
This affirmation is understood as claiming that there will be no prophet after Muhammad and also that he is a continuity with earlier prophets including Isa (Muslim Jesus) who is the messenger and prophet immediately preceding him. Being the seal of the prophets, the message which Muhammad brought carries finality and is the culmination of all previous messages by affirming the truth of Allah’s message and correcting previous messages where there are contradictions.
Is this claim true? How do we discerning and test these claims concerning the prophethood of Muhammad? The bible warns us about the rise of false prophets as indicated by the following verses:
Matthew 7:15 (NKJV)
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
1 John 4:1 (NKJV)
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
