Jesus is called the Son of God in the gospel. At the birth of Jesus, the angel told the Virgin Mary:“. . . ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. . . . of his kingdom there will be no end.’ And Mary said to the angel, ‘How will this be since I am a virgin?’ And the angel answered her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God’” (Luke1:30-35).
Isaiah (v 7:14) also prophesied the virgin birth of Jesus:
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (meaning “God with us”).
The Quran states Q 3:45 “(Remember) when the angels said: "O Maryam (Mary)! Verily, Allah gives you the glad tidings of a Word ["Be!" - and he was! i.e. 'Isa (Jesus) the son of Maryam (Mary)] from Him, his name will be the Messiah 'Isa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), held in honour in this world and in the Hereafter, and will be one of those who are near to Allah" and further clarifies with the passages in the Quran:
And they say, “The Most Merciful has taken [for Himself] a son.” You have done an atrocious thing. The heavens almost rupture therefrom and the earth splits open and the mountains collapse in devastation that they attribute to the Most Merciful a son. And it is not appropriate for the Most Merciful that He should take a son (Q2:116-117).
Verily, the likeness of 'Isa (Jesus) before Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: "Be!" - and he was (Q3:59)
From this comparison, one can easily notice that the Quran contradicts the Bible that Jesus is the Son of God. Although both mention the virgin birth through the Spirit of God, Islam states that Jesus is created like Adam, a human being. If the author of the Quran is the same as the God of the Bible, why then this contradiction?
According to Muslims, if Jesus is the Son of God, it will mean that the Christians believe in more than one god. This is far from the truth. Jesus Himself upheld monotheism. When asked for the greatest command, Jesus responded, “The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:29-30). The issue lies in that the author of the Quran did not understand the triune nature of the God of the Bible. Accordingly, if Jesus is the Son of God it would subscribe to the belief that God has a son through biological birth with Mary as the mother. The Quran wrongly states the Trinity as God, Jesus, and Mary which is not biblical.
Furthermore, If Jesus is the Son of God, then there is no reason for another message from God to come in the form of the Quran, as the mission of Jesus would have been completed as God requires. Jesus has brought the finality of redemption of man and this is the reason why Jesus, as he gave up his spirit at Calvary said, “it is finished”, meaning the Scriptures have been fulfilled (John 19:28-30). This causes and upsets the core doctrines of Islam, and will make Islam irrelevant, as Muhammad cannot be the last messenger and final prophet coming 600 years later bringing another message. So, to Islam, if Jesus is not the Son of God would allow for it to bring a new message, which it indeed did, a different gospel that minuses Jesus and exalts the founder of Islam. Moreover, If Jesus is not the Son of God, then there is no need to trust and believe in Him completely as He is a mere human being and is not perfect.
1 John 2:22
22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.
2 John 77 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.
It is essential that we understand the doctrine of the Trinity and although we may not fully grasp this as God is spirit, infinite, and not constrained by time or space, it is the triune being of God who gives us the understanding of how the redemption promise of God. is fulfilled. involving God the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
